In June of this summer I was fortunate enough to travel with my wife and kids to the South of France to celebrate the birthday and 50th Wedding Anniversary of Shelley Rolfe, our family's dearest friend. The trip was bittersweet, full of laughs, great food, lots of rose and on a number of occasions, tears. See this was a trip that had been in the planning for over a decade, only Shelley’s husband, David Rolfe Sr wasn’t able to make the trip due to his battle with Non Small Cell Lung Cancer. He died on August 5th, 2015.
David Rolfe Sr, more casually known to us as Big D, was an extraordinary man who above all, taught me that Life is for Living. His generous spirit is the only reason I saw places like Desolation Sound, was able to enjoy rogue rope swings and rekindle a love for the sport of tennis. Without him, I would never have known of places like Mink Island, Squirrel Cove or Indian Wells. The time spent in France with Shelley & the rest of the Rolfe family gave me pause and reminded me that I could do more to help others in their fight.
Now I am not a Cyclist. I am not an Endurance Athlete by any stretch of the imagination. But every Friday, this group of cyclists, known as the Fireflies, ride unceremoniously by my house pre-dawn. They ride to raise money for Cancer research and Revolutionary treatments. Their motto: For Those who suffer, We ride!
This Year, in the spirit of Big D, I have joined them. Every Friday morning I wake early and don my humiliatingly tight lycra to cycle with them. And the final week of September 2018 I will ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, averaging over 100mi a day for six consecutive days over the mountains of the California Coast with the Fireflies to raise money for City of Hope.
I have dedicated my ride to Big D and am counting on your support. Not for me, for our friends like David Sr, who have suffered from this miserable disease called Cancer.
City of Hope is a leading research and treatment center here for cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases. Their research has revolutionized how patients across the nation battle their diseases and their physicians give life-saving care with compassion and comprehensive support.
They are literally curing Cancer, one small step at a time.
I have made a commitment to City of Hope and need your support in raising the money. Pls contribute what you can. Even a small donation with enough friends can add up to make a big difference. Your donations are tax-deductible and 100% of your contribution will go to the City of Hope, the cycling expenses for the actual ride I will pay separately. Please help.
For Big D, and for all Those who Suffer, We Ride!
