I'm proud to be joining the Fireflies for a special ride to raise funds for City of Hope this September. For 600 miles over six days, I'll be one of 50 cyclists riding from San Francisco to Los Angeles with one important goal– supporting the work of a tireless non-profit dedicated to treating and finding cures for cancer. As riders, we pay all of our own expenses so that every tax deductible dollar you give goes directly to City of Hope. I've pushed my goal to $8000. With your help, I think we can get there.
This ride means a lot to me. 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of my own cancer diagnosis. I was a fit young cyclist in the best shape of my life when I discovered an uncomfortable, hard lump. After some time spent in denial, I saw a doctor where an exam and ultrasound confirmed the existence of a testicular tumor and my life quickly changed. I had surgery to remove the testicle, followed by daily radiation therapy to my abdomen to target infected lymph nodes. The treatment left me sick and exhausted most days and it would likely leave me unable to father a child. Still, compared to many who are attacked by cancer, I was one of the lucky ones.
Nothing shakes up your life and reshuffles your priorities quite like cancer. Yet over the next months and years, the anxiety that came with each CT scan began to wane, and I started to feel like myself again. What truly made me feel like I was recovering was getting back on the bike and riding with friends and my super supportive wife, Juliet. Cycling has been a big part of my life ever since.
Twenty years later, I’m still here. But along the way, I’ve seen cancer come crashing into the lives of friends and family. Some have been fortunate, but, heartbreakingly, others have not been spared. I ride for them—so that City of Hope can continue their amazing work and perhaps, one day, their research will lead to all cancers becoming as treatable as mine was.
I made a commitment to City of Hope, and I have a lot of work ahead of me to reach my fundraising goals and to prepare for this grueling ride. I need your help. Please join me as I mark this anniversary, by donating to this important event. Just click the big "Donate" button to make a 100% tax-deductible donation. Every amount helps; even small donations add up to make a big difference.
Since its beginnings more than a century ago, City of Hope has touched the lives of countless individuals facing the challenges of cancer and has given them hope.
Thank you so much for your support!
