2018 Walk for Hope - Los Angeles

Sarah's Breasties

It’s that time of year where my fears start to cut deeper as I near my full body scan. I take medications daily and go to physical therapy twice a week to repair damage the treatments have caused me. I see my Oncologist every 3 months. However, November is the month that the true picture gets captured. Has it grown? Has it spread? What will the doctor say when he calls me? Will I cry out in fear again or shed tears of relief that I can carry on? I am fully aware of the statistics and what I am up against. My breast cancer diagnosis was 3 years ago. I have made it through chemo, radiation and now 7 surgeries. I live my days knowing that at any point the cancer can spread. At times my bones and joints ache and I get overwhelmed with exhaustion, the medications wear me down. A friendly reminder of what I have endured and am still fighting. I have done all that I can to resume to a normal life. I am a mother to 3 amazing children, I have date nights with my husband and keep our social calendar full. I have gone back to work at a company that I love. I take vacations with my family and friends and enjoy every minute of them. I have mastered the art of distraction to carry on, but that does not mean the fear and circumstances are gone. My priorities are different and plans for the future now have a greater sense of urgency.
Living with Cancer has given me greater purpose to make the most out of my days. My story is just one story. I share this in hopes that my journey will bring greater awareness for those battling and the impact this disease has on 1 in 8 women who will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. In 2018, it’s expected that 266,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S.
The month of November also brings a special day in the Cancer community. The City of Hope hosts The Walk for Hope to help find a cure for Women’s Cancers. Over the past 3 years, family and friends have joined me to raise awareness, raise funds and support this cause. We will be walking again on Sunday, November 4, 2018 to help find a cure. Donations go towards research and treatment. Together we can find a cure and prevent generations ahead from having to battle this disease. This day, this walk, this event has meant so much to me. It’s a day where people from all over the world come together to share their stories of fighting Cancer, overcoming the battle and those who have lost loved ones. These are the moments when we are stronger together.
Please walk beside me for all the families who have been touched by this disease. We need to find a cure.

With Love, Hugs and Fist Bumps,

Sarah
