In 2015 I was diagnosed with Cushing Syndrome, a relatively rare hormonal disorder caused by prolonged exposure to high levels of cortisol (in my case due to tumors on my adrenal glands). This has shifted my whole world and, while I have generally remained positive, I have also suffered.
Riding a bike eight hours a day for six days straight is a painful and demanding experience, but it's nothing compared to the physical, mental, and emotional pain that chronically or terminally ill patients and their families endure on a daily basis. I have made a promise to myself that as long as I am healthy enough to do it, I will ride. And I will not be scared. So here I go.
I just registered for an event with City of Hope to take my beloved bike 600+ miles from San Fransisco to LA with the Fireflies - a carefully selected group of 49 other lunatics just like me. Our small amount of suffering on two wheels is offered in exchange for a small amount of hope and a belief that we can make a difference. Preparing for this journey will require countless hours of training and preparation. I’ve committed my time to make sure that I’m ready, but I have also committed to raise a minimum of $4,000 to ride the Cali coast. For that, I’m asking you to support me by donating to this important event. Every rider pays 100% of their own way out of their own pocket. So every dollar you give goes directly to City of Hope.
City of Hope is a leading research and treatment center for life-threatening diseases. Since its beginnings, City of Hope has touched the lives of countless individuals facing the challenge of disease and has given them hope. And the only thing greater than fear is hope. (I will ride. And I will not be scared. Cue: hope).
So go ahead, don't be scared. Just click the big "Donate Now" button to make a tax-deductible donation. It's that easy and it's that important to me.
